A Catholic funeral is more than a farewell—it is a spiritual rite that reflects the Church’s belief in the resurrection and eternal life through Christ. The Catholic tradition encourages families to observe three key parts of the funeral liturgy: the Vigil (Wake), the Funeral Mass or Liturgy, and the Rite of Committal.
Prayer Vigil (Wake Service)
Often referred to simply as the wake, this gathering allows family and friends to come together in prayer and remembrance. The Rosary may be recited, and time is set aside for reflection and unity before the formal liturgy.Funeral Mass or Funeral Liturgy
The Funeral Mass, also known as the Requiem Mass, includes the celebration of the Eucharist and is conducted by a Catholic priest in the church. It incorporates scripture readings, hymns, and prayers for the soul of the departed, placing emphasis on Christ’s sacrificial love.
Families may also choose a Funeral Liturgy without Communion. While it does not include the Eucharist, the structure, prayers, and reverence remain, offering comfort and hope.
Rite of Committal
After the church service, the casket is taken to the cemetery or crematorium. Final prayers are offered before the body is laid to rest. This final rite provides closure for the family while affirming the Christian belief in the resurrection.
